The Shinning
Below is the trailer for the film The Shinning I have used the trailer in order to analyse sound and show its effectivness within a thriller film
Type of Sound | Description of Sound | Describe The Mood It Creates |
Non Diegetic | It is the back ground music which first starts of slow when we hear that he comes from a family and he is a family man | It creates a mellow mood which the audience first start of relaxed and begin to get into the storyline and they get to know what is going on within the narrative |
Diegetic | When the characters are talking to different other characters | This does not create a mood as two characters are having a conversation this just helps us to understand what is going on |
Voice Over | There is a voice over at the beginning giving the audience an idea of what the storyline is going to be about and what is happening to the family and what they will be doing when its summer | This does not create a mood however the audience now know the plot of the storyline |
Non – Diegetic | When there is a storm we hear the change in music and we begin to realize that this sets the scene | This builds up the tension of the scene and prepares the audience for something exciting |
Parallel Sound | The sound and the scene are matching because when the song starts to go up beat so does the editing fitting more exciting clips within the trailer | This creates a suspense for the audience because they will notice that there are plenty suspense, shocking , surprises scenes |
Contrapuntal Sound | At the beginning of the sound track it first starts of fasts then dies down. The clips they show are slow but the music for the first 10 seconds is fast | The mood portrayed would be confusion because they are playing an upbeat music to start off with then they slow clips of nothing exciting happening |
Silence | The last 10 seconds there is silence then the music builds its self up again right at the end | This creates suspense and tensions because the audience might not know what to expect or what could happen |
Lyden the definitions you give for each term are good, however to demonstrate a deeper understanding you should complete the table above or insert a film extract.
ReplyDeleteWhen adding a fim extract concertrate on the sound used within the opening sequence and expalin the Directors choice for using particular sound techinques, don't forget to state what these techniques bring to the film.
ReplyDeleteWell done Lyden your amendments to this post have made a significant difference. You now demonstrate a proficient understanding of sound and it used within thriller films. However you must add to this post and suggest how you intend to use sound within your own production.
